The State Theatre Minneapolis opened in 1921. Designed in a free Italian Renaissance style and boasting amongst other fine features, a glass stage floor which when lit from below, could create breathtaking visual effects, the State Theatre Minneapolis was highly regarded as one of the most elegant and technologically forward theatres in the U.S at that time.
In 1978, The State Theatre Minneapolis was purchased by the Jesus People Church, acting as their place of worship for the next 11 years until 1989 when it was purchased by the Minneapolis Community Development Agency. A two-year, $8.8 million renovation commenced and The State Theatre Minneapolis reopened in 1991, great care having been taken to preserve much of the theatre's original ornate beauty including the proscenium arch, six chandeliers and wall murals - all of which are restored versions of the original features.
Following the renovation and reopening, The State Theatre schedule has attracted a diverse range of acts, including Broadway hits such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Avenue Q and Sweeney Todd, and the world-premiere of Grumpy Old Men - a Minnesota-based movie.
